Female Pleasure is Understudied
Everyone knows about the little blue pill, Viagra, which has become the secret weapon for men globally to cure erectile dysfunction. Women have long been awaiting a similar treatment, a female viagra, to help boost desire, ease stimulation, and get in the mood when they want to. However female desire has been understudied and under researched. Brazenly highlighted by the New York Times just a few weeks ago, if half of the population has a clitoris why don't doctor's study it? https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/17/health/clitoris-sex-doctors-surgery.html
Yes, Ladies have Erectile Tissue: The Clitoris 101
The fact that women uniquely have an organ on their body which is solely designed for pleasure is fascinating! Yet we are so far behind on studying how the female body works. So let's focus on what we do know--we know that the clitoris contains a network of ten thousand nerve endings, and is known as erectile tissue. Erectile tissue (like that of the tissue of a penis) fills with blood and expands when stimulated. So when a woman is aroused her blood vessels are dilated and blood flows to the clitoris/erectile tissue to swell creating the feeling of desire which results in the Skene glands (located at the opening of the vagina) to secrete lubrication fluid. (By dumbing it down quite a bit-- this is the simple explanation!)
How Does Viagra Work?
So now that we understand how the clitoris works, let's understand how viagra works and why topical viagra (Scream Cream) can help women boost desire. When a man is aroused the brain releases a chemical called cGMP which relaxes muscles in the erectile tissue of a penis allowing blood to flow. After ejaculation, PDE5 is an enzyme that is released in the body breaking down the erection. Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor enabling an erection to be maintained (if a man struggles to maintain an erection or helps hold an erection longer).
Why Our Low Libido Cream is "Female Viagra"
So now that we have understood how an erection works and Viagra in conjunction, does the same science apply to women? Studies on female animals have shown that cGMP is also present during the female arousal process and that sildenafil (generic Viagra) facilitates a response during the arousal process*. The use of Viagra (Sildenafil by mouth) in women has had limited, controversial studies with mixed results. However (which contains generic Viagra, Sildenafil) is applied directly to the erectile tissue, the clitoris, dilating blood vessels. It also mixed with other elements which work in conjunction with Sildenafil for a targeted approach of helping to boost libido in women. The She Can Health team will break down each ingredient and it's role in female libido in the next post, in the meantime you can find more information on our Low Libido Cream on our product page.
